Q.
A.
It is true that the general public in China are more outspoken than
before, but there are still lingering fears among higher intellectuals
like writers, scholars, reporters and professors?
It all depends on who they are. Take Bai Hua for example. I feel
that his work entitled "The Sun and Man" is not good at all. I
have also seen the movie. How can he say such words: "You love
your motherland, but does your motherland love you in return?". There may be mistakes in (the country's) policies, but what have
they to do with the motherland? You cannot dislike your motherland
simply because there the policies are wrong. Can one draw such a
conclusion? Take your case for instance. Though you have suffered
a lot in China, I believe you still feel affection towards China.
The "Cultural Revolution" is gone forever
છે.
A.
Yes, that is true, but we should treat the country and the govern-
ment as two separate issues. Just now, you made reference to Bai
Hua; there is a rumour rife overseas that LIU Binyan, who had received
yet another blow, is so much aggrieved that he has given up writing.
Did you hear anything about this before you left Beijing for Hong
Kong?
No, I did not. All kinds of comments will surface nowadays. Any-
how, there is one point I wish to make. The kind of treatment that
you received or, you may say, I also received
<
because I had also
been imprisoned for six years - this so-called 'dictatorship of the
masses' whereby people were deprived of freedom and were dogged even when they went to the convenience, will never happen again.
Q.
A.
Do you mean the time of the "Cultural Revolution"?
Exactly.
