1. We believe Hong Kong agreement provides best possible framework for continuing stability and prosperity in Hong Kong up to and after 1997. Are committed to working closely with China to implement it.

Shows how difficult International community has welcomed agreement. international issues can be resolved peacefully.

2. UK legislation necessary to enable us to ratify agreement by 30 June 1985. In this context Hong Kong Bill has passed through House

Provides for: of Commons and is being considered by House of Lords.

the termination of British sovereignty and jurisdiction over Hong Kong as from 1 July 1997;

subsequent Orders in Council to amend British Nationality law and to adapt other laws affecting Hong Kong;

privileges and immunities to be accorded in the UK to Chinese members of the Joint Liaison Group which will be established in accordance with the terms of the agreement, in order to continue liaison, consultation and exchange of information.
