VISIT BY THE PRIME MINISTER OF CANADA

HONG KONG

1.

Encouraging economic indicators in Hong Kong. GDP expected to

grow by 7% and exports by 18% this year. These illustrate

confidence in future of territory following signature of agreement.

Nationality.

Hong Kong British Dependent Territories

Citizens will be eligible to acquire new form of British

nationality prior to 1997, British National (Overseas), and

to retain it for rest of their lives. Essentially this

will be BDTC status under a new name, except that it wil1

not be transmissible by descent. BN (0) s will have right of

abode in Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

Important that new BN (0) passports are accepted

internationally in the same way as BDTC passports

present.

(b) Civil Aviation. Hong Kong SAR will enjoy considerable

autonomy. Chinese will give SAR government specific authorisation to negotiate, renew
