all other Commonwealth citizens enjoyed unrestricted right of 11 entry to the UK until 1962 when the Commonwealth Immigrants

Act 1962 imposed controls on the entry into Britain of

13 Commonwealth citizens and British passport holders whose

passports were issued by or on behalf of the governments of 15 colonies or dependent territories. These restrictions were

extended by the Commonwealth Immigrants Act 1968 which limited 17 automatic right of entry to the UK to citizens of UK and

18 Colonies who were born naturalised or adopted in the UK (or 19 who had a parent or grandparent who possessed that qualification) 20 or who were registered as citizens of UK and Colonies in the 21 UK or in an independent Commonwealth country. This right to 22 Live indefinitely in the UK and to come and go freely became 23 the right of abode' as defined in the Immigration Act 1971. 24 The BNA 1981 gave nationality effect to the immigration status
