31st December 1996 and before 1st July 1997,

No person shall acquire British Dependent Territories

citizenship on or after the relevant date by virtue of a connection

with Hong Kong and, accordingly, in Schedule 6 to the British

Nationality Act 1981 (a) (British dependent territories) the words

"Hong Kong" shall be omitted.

5.-(1) Where a person ceases on the relevant date to be a

British Dependent Territories citizen by virtue of Article 3 above

and would, but for this paragraph, thereby be rendered stateless,

then he shall be a [British Overseas citizen].

(2) Where a person born on or after the relevant date would,

but for this paragraph, be born stateless, then, if at the time of

Native the birth his father or mother is a [British (Overseas) national] or

a [British Overseas citizen] by virtue of paragraph (1) above, he

shall be a [British Overseas citizen].

(3) A person who is a [British Overseas citizen] by virtue

of paragraph (1) or (2) above shall cease to be such a citizen if,

in whatever circumstances and whether under the British Nationality

Act 1981 or otherwise, he acquires any other citizenship or

nationality whatever.
