have the opportunity to meet the new Commandant and the new Deputy Commandant.

Otherwise, it would be appropriate for Lady Young to visit Switzerland (10), and Australia/New Zealand (3) if

the Secretary of State did not visit those countries.

Mr Rifkind

24.

The sub-Committee attached importance to a visit by Mr Rifkind to East Berlin and the GDR and possibly Hungary (2) in March. They would not press for visits to Romania and

Bulgaria.

25.

The sub-Committee agreed that Mr Rifkind should visit

Nigeria (5) on the assumption that the Prime Minister would

not go

and when bilateral circumstances permitted. Additionally

Mr Rifkind might undertake three African tours. These should includ

Kenya (for a HOMC) and neighbours (1) and West Africa (4). The

choice of the third tour (which should if possible include Angola) would depend on the possibility of members of the Royal Family attending forthcoming functions' in Ghana, Botswana and Swaziland.

26.

With reference to the proposed visits to Botswana and

Lesotho (10), the sub-Committee noted that there would be a Presidency dimension to the UK representation at these celebrations.

Mr Renton

27.

The sub-Committee noted that Mr Renton planned to visit Thailand, China and Japan (1) from 17-30 January. They agreed that it would be a good idea for him to visit Iceland (2) on defence grounds (cf proposals for the Prime Minister to visit Norway and Denmark, para 7). In addition, the sub-Committee suggested that Mr Renton might visit Egypt and Sudan at Easter; Sardi Arabia and Oman, and possibly Jordan at Whitsun; and other Gulf States in the Autumn, so that his familiarisation tours to the Middle East could be completed during 1986.
