MR RENTON'S VISIT TO HONG KONG (27 31 OCTOBER 1985)
-
5.
HONG KONG ECONOMY
Points to Make in Public and to Hong Kong Government Officials
1.
Confidence clearly re-established
following signing of
Agreement. Recent downturn in level of domestic exports
appears to be only temporary setback and generally the
Hong Kong economy is performing well. Revised estimates of 1985 growth still very
very respectable in comparison to other major
economies.
2.
Aware of your worries about clamour for protectionist
policies, particularly in the United States. Doing all we can
to help Hong Kong. Mr Brittan raising Hong Kong worries during
current visit to Washington.
