Points to Make in Public and to Hong Kong Government Officials

Confidence clearly re-established

following signing of

Agreement. Recent downturn in level of domestic exports

appears to be only temporary setback and generally the

Hong Kong economy is performing well. Revised estimates of 1985 growth still very

very respectable in comparison to other major

economies.

Aware of your worries about clamour for protectionist

policies, particularly in the United States. Doing all we can

to help Hong Kong. Mr Brittan raising Hong Kong worries during

current visit to Washington.
