OPEN SPACE

6.4 Primary Open Space

Primary open space in San Tin is essentially the lake/water system parkway along the eastern valley floor; it provides the major spine from which all neighbourhood, community, and town scale elements are extended. Major land- scape buffers are also created to screen use areas and roads, creating a strong, enfolding spatial structure. A comprehensive system of footpaths and cycleways will be designed along this system connecting all town areas north & south of Castle Peak Road. Several special garden areas will be designed into the system as well.

6.5 Town/Regional System

A major town park area north of Old San Tin Village completes the open space system. Water Systems throughout the town feed the main lake, feature, and all circulation paths in the town converge on the park.

As well as the primary open space already out- lined above, the Town Park contains active re- creation facilities such as pitches, play areas, and firm tracks.

Within the Town Park, a Wild Life Reserve is proposed to retain and encourage existing migratory and local birds within the Mai Po Marsh Area to frequent a 'safe' and stable habitat. The lower area of the Main Lake with surrounding low lying and marsh-like areas are suggested for this reserve. This lake would be shallow to accommodate waders and the like already abundant in this area. Connected to the Reserve is an ornithological zoo which will provide a base for research and monitoring as well as a variety of exotic species on show to the public.

6.6 Town Centre

The town centre is composed of a major pedestrian street anchored on one end by the town square south of Castle Peak Road, bearing northwards between old and new San Tin housing, terminating at the Town Park. The Main regional and community facilities are anchored on this system.

An arboretum, play fountain, regional commercial frontage, Town-house frontage, and a central town hall in the town square, along with major uses northwards will create a vital, active town centre environment. Designs will centre around an urban square/plaza motif.
