The Consular Department of the
Ministry
of
Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China pre- sents its compliments to the British Embassy in China. and has the honour to state as follows:
The following understanding, which incorporates proposals put forward by both sides, has been reached through consultations between the Consular Department of the Foreign Ministry of the P.R.C. and the British Embassy in China on new arrangements to be made by the British authorities in Hongkong for Chinese citizens travelling via Hongkong for private purposes:
1. The Hongkong Immigration Department will nor- mally grant 7 days' stay in Hongkong to Chinese citi- zens travelling via Hongkong for private purposes, pro- vided that they have valid ordinary Chinese passports or travel permits, entry visas for the country of des- tination or a letter from the authorities of the coun- try of destination agreeing to issue the visas in Hong- kong, and proof that they will continue their journey.
2. The length of stay in Hongkong may be extend- ed to one month if there are legitimate reasons. In ex- ceptional circumstances, the length of stay may be ex- tended beyond one month.
