SUBJECT:
In the questions that followed my statement on the
Hong Kong agreement in the House of Lords on 25 October
you asked what the situation regarding the judiciary in
Brunei would be. You asked if they would continue to be
administered from Hong Kong up to 1997 or whether special
arrangements would be made. I undertook to let you have
further information on this point.
Enclosures-flag(s)...........
At the moment Brunei enjoys judicial assistance from
Hong Kong under the Anglo-Brunei Treaty of Friendship and
Cooperation. At this stage we see no need to change the
nature of this assistance, but obviously we shall need to
have discussions with the Brunei Government about how
this cooperation will be managed after 1997.
