Please see Mrs Klowak's minute of 12 September putting a case for an entertainment allowance for Sir P Nairne in Hong Kong. think we can accept the need for a modest allowance especially as the exercise has the fall personal support of the SOFS and it would be petty to argue against this limited extra expense when the whole will be so costly. Fortunately all expenditure is chargeable to Finance Departments 'Special Missions' subhead.

Mr Calder finds Mrs Klowak's figures much higher than our rates. He also makes an interesting point in para 4 of his minute which is also attached. Based on these calculations and Mrs Klowak's guestimate of numbers of guests, I suggest we offer Sir Patrick £400, broken down as follows:

29/1

(102).

1.

CODE 18-77

12 meals @ £20

£240

(3 per fortnight)

40 drinks @ £4

(5 per week)

£160

£400

His own meals should come from his subsistence allowance.

3.

If you agree I shall recommend an allowance of £400 on the understanding that he accounts for it upon his return.
