The Verbatim Report

- 5 -

The final question asked of respondents was "Is there anything else which you want to say about the Agreement and the future of Hong Kong?" The main purpose here was to give infor- mants the opportunity to express opinions which might not have been formally sought within the main body of the questionnaire.

We

It is clear from the volume and diversity of comment that this objective was achieved. were, however, faced with the daunting task of collating the responses for data processing. Since informants were invited to comment on any aspect of the Agreement or future of Hong Kong, the range of response did not lend itself easily to the codification process. We were faced with the choice of either attempting to encapsulate each comment within the para- meters of a set of broad definition codes, alternatively to present the entire comment as a verbatim response.

We chose the latter because we believe that much of the 'flavour' of Hong Kong opinion is represented by some 3,000 such comments, and this vital element could be lost in the coding process. The results are presented in Volume Three, Part 1. Part 2 contains the demogra- phic profile of the person making each comment, thus making it possible to relate each com- ment to the type of person making it, without divulging the identity of the respondent.
