A Summary of the Opinion Survey

on Hong Kong's Future by Messrs LEE Lit-man and CHAN Wai-wang and Comments made on the Subject

(Special Report) A questionnaire to allow the public to voice their opinion on Hong Kong's future was specially designed and prepared for distribution upon request of some of the electors in Yau Ma Tei District. Some 3.000 copies were distributed to organisations such as MAC/OCS, trade unions, labour unions, banks, schools etc from 13.4.1984 onwards. The opinion survey, with target groups focussed on the above-mentioned associations, to k the form of random sampling. With the help of a number of young volunteers, street interviews were carried out on 15.4.84 and 21.4.84 at Jordan Road Ferry Fier and Star Ferry Fier, to collect public opinion and distribute questionnaires to the passers-by. Below is a summarization of the course of the survey. For the distribution of 600 questionnaires in the streets on 15.4.84, the response of the people was quite pood. Under the footbridge of Jordan Road Ferry Fier, because there was the provision of tables, stools and ball-pens, many people stopped to sit

down and answer the questionnaires.

As for Star Ferry lier, it

was not suitable to provide tables or stools, but the earnest people did them on the walls, rails or their knees. The duration of the work had lasted for five hours and more than 400 questionnaires were collected

400 on the spot. On 21.4.84, the 2nd street interview was made. questionnaires were given out. Owing to the announcement made by the British Foreign Minister that Hong Kong's sovereignty will be returned to China after 1997, the people's response wis not so earnest that day. Nevertheless, although it was after a rain and there were fewer pedestrians, some 200 questionnaires which were done on the spot were collected. In both interviews, 1,000 questionnaires were distributed and more than 600 copies ere collected on the spot.

The result was quite good. For this point, it is suggested that district boards, which are planning to have street interviews, should pay attention to the appropriate sites and the provision of writing instruments. If possible, providing seats will be even better.
