Summary of 1.1
1.10
Most of the respondents felt, out of nationalist sentiment, that Hong Kong belongs to Chinese territory and that China has the right to recover the territory. But, having grown accustomed to the status quo and the existing social system, they hoped that China would let the territory be administered by Hongkong people after it reverted to China. At the same time, the survey also attempted to assess the public's view on how Hong Kong should be administered in future, based on such factors as the respondents' occupation, educational standard, age, whether they supported China's claim over Hong Kong and whether China had the right to recover Hong Kong. The result was that irrespective of the circum- stances, the respondents held similar views. Most of them favoured Hongkong people alministering Hong Kong and, to a lesser extent, British administration. Only a small minority favoured Chinese rule.
2.
Attitude towards 'self-rule'
2.1 Residents' acceptance of 'self-rule':
Findings of the poll indicate that 40.21% of the respondents accepted self-rule, while nearly 20% (19.81%) accept it in part. In other words, those who belonged to these two categories comprised over 60% of the total number of respondents. Those who did not accept 'elf-rule' accounted for only 8.53% while 20.46% had no comment. Slightly over 10% (10.46%) of the respondents did not know what 'Hongkong people administering Hong Kong' meant. Docs this imply that the publicity work of the authorities concerned has still to be improved? (See Table 12)
