Foreword
1. Motive of survey
Between Cetober 1983 and March 1934, I had held a number of seminars on Hong Kong's future with some 50 members of grass-roots organizations in Southern District. Those who attended the seminars aired their views freely. The information collected was subsequently edited and published.
The question of Hong Kong's future has a direct bearing on each and every resident of Southern District. To assess the views of the residents more extensively, a public opinion survey was conducted at the end of March. The data collected was processed by computer and compiled into a report. The report will be submitted to the Chinese and British governments for reference. It is hoped that the wishes
of Hongkong people would be taken into consideration in the futuro Sino-British agreement.
2. Purpose of survey
2.1 To assess the feelings of Southern District residents on China's
resumption of sovereignty over Hong Kong;

To reflect the feelings of Southern District residents on the the Hongkong people administering Hong Kong' formula;
2.3 To assess the aspirations of Southern District residents on
democratization and the basic law during the transitional period between now and 1997; and
2.4 To assess the socio-economic activities status of the interviewees.
Chapter 2: Target and methodology
1. Target: residents of Southern District
According to the census statisticsof 1981, the population of Southern District is 217,400, atutributed among the following areas: Pokfulam, Wah Pau Estate, Tin Wan, Shok Pai Wan, Aberdeen, Ap Lei Chau, Wong Chuk Hang, Deep Water Bay, Repulse Bay, Middle Day, South Bay, Stanley and Shek 0. The targets of this survey were sampled from the residents of the above areas, aged 18 or over.
2. Sampling method
A number of schools were sampled from the 30-odd primary schools and 10-odd secondary schools in the district according to /distribution ratio of the district's population (see Table 1), The sample schools were asked to distribute questionnaires among the students for completion by their parents.
