While life goes on as usual in Hong Kong, the "fragrant harbour", and its inhabitants behave as they have always done, namely as though the charms of the city had to be enjoyed to the full before they cease, a few hundred kilometres north-east of the city preparations are being made for mass immigration: Taiwan expects more than half a million Hong Kong Chinese to
emigrate from the Crown colony in the not too distant future. The government in Taipeh intimated recently that they would be made most welcome in the
island republic.
