FUTURE OF HONG KONG: CHINESE MINISTERIAL MOVEMENTS

1. During the discussions in Hong Kong last week, Sir R Evans mentioned the following likely Chinese plans for overseas visits in the next few months:

First ten days in April:

Foreign Minister Wu Xueqian to Europe (countries not announced).

Later in summer Premier Zhao Ziyang and Chairman Li Xian Nian to Europe. (No dates or countries announced).

We have already agreed that discussions with Wu during his tour would not be an effective means of conducting ''future'' business. We shall however need to take his plans into account in timing the Secretary of State's visit to Peking. Other visits may be similarly relevant later on.
