RECENT DEVELOPMENTS
1. There have been no significant developments in our talks with
the Chinese since Sir P Cradock paid his farewell calls on Chinese
leaders before Christmas (I minuted separately on 21 December on the
Zhao and Ji Pengfei calls, and Peking tel 1352 of 15 December
reported the call on Foreign Minister Wu).
2. On 4 January our Charge in Peking, Mr Galsworthy, had dinner with Yao Guang. Apart from a general discussion on the talks, the
working papers and the form of a possible agreement, Yao Guang said
that his place as leader of the Chinese negotiating team would be
taken by Assistant Foreign Minister Zhou Nan with effect from the
next round. (I minuted separately on this on 5 January).
