Thank you for your helpful minute of 8 March about

Mr McLaren's letter of 16 February to Dick Clift. David Wilson has since made a few enquiries of his own and it sounds as though the September issue of the China Quarterly is now devoted to Hong Kong. A copy of our reply to Mr McLaren is attached.

2. I was interested to hear about Dr Paul Chen and his connection with Chen Tiqiang. It is a pity his visit to China, like Roderick MacFarquhar's, has been shelved for the time being. We should be interested to know if and when either is resurrected.

3. I do not recall anyone here briefing Paul Chen last autumn (your para.4). But if his visit to China, and presumably Hong Kong, is on again we might consider trying to see him before he sets off.
