Note for the Record
I had lunch at Hong Kong University on 18 March
with Dr. E.V. Roberts (Political Science Department).
At
our table also were John Young, Staff Tutor, Department of
Extra Mural Studies, and Claire Hollingworth.
2.
Dr. Young is one of the academics going on the
10-day trip to Peking and Sian, beginning 1 April, at the
invitation of the Chinese. He and the rest of his group will
see NCNA on Tuesday to finalise the itinerary. Unlike the
previous trips of which he was aware, Dr. Young said that all
expenses were being paid by the Chinese. Even wives too
were included in this invitation. Curiously also the
academics had been asked whom they wished to see, and so far
no details of calls or engagements had been supplied to them.
3.
Others going are, from the Hong Kong University,
Edward Chen (Director, Centre of Asian Studies, Economist), the
Head of the Electrical Engineering Department (sic), and
one or two others including possibly the geographer Leung.
Victor Sit had been asked but was not going. From the Chinese
University Dr. Joseph Cheng, (but not Professor Weng,
presumably because of his Taiwanese connections) and the
Dean of Social Studies (?) were going. He thought the party
numbered about 8 or 10 academics plus their companions.
No gweilos were included!
