PROBLEM
.1. How to reply to a letter to the Secretary of State from
the Hon R A McAlpine asking if he would be free to see
Mr David Davies, Managing Director-designate of the Hong Kong Land
Company, before Mr Davies leaves for Hong Kong on 1 October.
RECOMMENDATION
2. I recommend that the Secretary of State should reply on the
lines of the attached draft.
BACKGROUND
3. Mr Davies is currently Finance Director of the MEPC property group, having worked previously for Hill Samuel and the Chase Manhattan Bank. In August it was announced that he had been
appointed to be Managing Director of the Hong Kong Land Company.
He will succeed Mr Trevor Bedford, who resigned after the company
had incurred heavy losses as a result of the decline of the
property market in Hong Kong.
4. Mr McAlpine has suggested that Mr Davies might call on the
Secretary of State at the end of next week. The Secretary of State
will, however, be away then, and Mr Luce will not have returned to
the office. In the circumstances, I suggest that Mr Davies should
call on Mr Giffard, who has kindly agreed and would be free at
3 pm on 29 September.
