Sir Adrian Swire KBE

Vice Chairman, John Swire and Sons Ltd, since 1966. Vice President of the General Council of British Shipping 1979-80. Had lunch with Lord Belstead and EXCO group in September 1982. (His brother, John Swire, is the group Chairman and the Chairman of the Hong Kong Association. He was not free to attend the lunch).

3. SPEAKING NOTE

If Lord Belstead wishes to make a brief speech he could include the following points: -

a) HMG firmly committed to search for solution satisfactory to the people of Hong Kong and Parliament. Believe the objectives agreed with the Chinese are the right ones; we mean to hold them to these.

b) Importance of maintaining confidence and stability in the territory while talks on the future are under way. Importance of Sir S Y Chung's visit as a demonstration of our close relationship and significance of EXCO'S role.

c) Sir S Y Chung's personal contribution. distinctions. Dedication to Hong Kong.
