Thank you very much for letting me have a copy of Peter William's letter which was finally published in the Birmingham Evening Mail; albeit in a truncated form.

G

The letter fails, of course, to make the point I have been endeavouring to get published namely that the initiative against corruption in the Police derived from the senior officers of the Force and not, as was the case in this country, the result of investigative journalism. I am surprised that the Hong Kong Government should be so coy about this. However at least the Birmingham Evening Mail has published a letter and for this gesture I am grateful.

I enjoyed our telephone conversation and your power- ful advocacy in defending the Hong Kong Government. The picture you paint, however, tends not to portray the com- plete situation which obtained in the early 1970s, and with which I became very familiar.

I am, nevertheless, much obliged to you for your achievement in getting the Birmingham Evening Mail to publish a more acceptable version of "Fighting corruption" than the contents of the interview with Mr. Lenehan published by this newspaper on the 17th October 1981.
