Report on Condemned Prisoners
and
ANNEX D
Staff of Town Manager & District Officer (Tsuen Wan) and CDO (Mong Kok) have consulted the wife of the victim, her neighbours and the local community on the case under review. Their attitudes towards the case and death sentence are summarised below
2.
(a)
the wife of the victim
-
Still much aggrieved by the tragic death of her husband, she strongly contends that, for the sake of justice, the death sentence should be carried out in this case.
(b) The neighbours
They seldom saw the victim in the past and do not know much about the case. However, they are in support of the death sentence and feel that it should be revived in order to deter violent crimes.
(c) The local community (comprising businessmen, housewives,
students and community leaders)
Some of them believe that the prisoners were affiliated to Triad societies and that the killing was probably committed with intent. Seen in this light, they consider the death sentence fully justified. Other respondents are unaware of the case but invariably point out that the resurrection of capital punishment is a necessity in order to combat violent crimes.
To sum up, public interest in this murder case appears to have diminished with the passage of time. Feedback seems to indicate that there is still a persistent body of public opinion in favour of the application of the death sentence.
