Report of the Regional Secretary (HK & K)

on Condemned

ANNEX D

Staff of DO (Tai Po) have consulted the victim's 'grand uncle',

who is in fact a fellow lansman and an old

acquaintance of the victim's grandfather. Mr. Yeung claims to know very little about the victim although her brother occasionally visits him in the past to borrow some money. He also cannot recall the circumstances of the tragedy. He therefore does not have much comments to offer on the case in question but he is inclined to be sympathetic towards the prisoner.

does not wish to see the death sentence being carried out because he thinks it cannot compensate for the life of the victim.

2.

He

Staff of CDO (Kwun Tong) have tried but failed to locate the nearest relative of the prisoner,

or his family. They have however sounded out the opinion of a number of local community leaders living in the area which include 'kai fongs', MAC and AC office-bearers. Since the murder took place a long time ago, none of them can recall anything about the case in question. However, believing that a cold-blooded murder may have been involved, they believe that the court's ruling is probably justified. Most AC and MAC members interviewed are in favour of death sentence being carried out at all times.

3.

Generally speaking, the public appear to show little interest in the case under review: few people are able to recall the case probably because it took place a long time ago and homicide cases are quite common- place in Hong Kong. Feedback also seems to indicate that there is still a persistent body of opinion in favour of the application of the death sentence.
