The jury clearly rejected entirely his version of the events on the morning of the 4th of April and were satisfied that the deceased died as a result of a deliberate attack upon him by the accused. I fully concur with this verdict. What exactly the accused hoped to gain from the death was not clear. However it would seem that he may have felt that, with the deceased out of the way, he would be permanently employed as the office manager.
When giving evidence the accused revealed himself to be a person of intelligence. Indeed the tailoring of his evidence, in an endeavour to explain the damaging scientific evidence against him, showed considerable ingenuity.
There do not appear to me to be any real circumstances on mitigation.
