Sir Murray MacLehose Governor

Government House Hong Kong

1 February 1982

Dear Governor MacLehose,

I have just been informed of your Immigration Department's refusal to grant Christine Vertucci an extension of her employment visa in Hong Kong. While your government's reasons for doing this are unclear to me, I must vehemently protest this action and ask that you allow Ms. Vertucci to continue her work.

Both in my personal research as well as work that colleagues and myself are carrying out for WHO, Ms. Vertucci and Asia Monitor's resources have been of invaluable assistance. In an era when inde- pendent scholarly research is so difficult to come by, Asia Monitor is providing a unique service which we all can ill afford to cripple by the expulsion of one of their staff.

In your review of her case, I ask you to seriously reconsider your actions.

Sincerely,

Jollen Cacancy 2
