RESPONSIBILITIES

The Overseas Police Adviser sees all reports on police matters and can offer expert advice on police matters and questions of internal security connected with Dependent Territories (DTs). Failure to consult him in good time can have serious consequences.

The Overseas Police Adviser and his Deputy pay regular biennial visits to DTs, and the information which they bring back is often of value outside the strict context of police administration.

ORGANISATION AND DUTIES

The Overseas Police Adviser and his Deputy are also designated the Inspector General and Deputy Inspector General of Dependent Territories Police. This does not imply that they are Inspectors in the sense of Diplomatic Service Inspectors, or that they exercise command over all or any police force in a DT. Nevertheless the Commissioners of all police forces in DTs depend upon the professional advice and experience of the Inspector General and his staff, and are unlikely to disregard his advice. It is also possible that, on the advice of the Inspector General, the Secretary of State would give an instruction to a OAG on some exceptionally important matter of police or internal security practice or procedure.

The Overseas Police Adviser and his staff also assist the ODM and Crown Agents in recruitment in the United Kingdom of police for service in DTs. They should always be consulted about such recruitment and about all personnel matters concerning police in DTs.
