Immigration Policy for the admission of

Immigrants from China

With effect from 15 January 1979 (XCC (79) 3)

(a)

the distinction between residents of Guangdong and residents from elsewhere in China was abolished;

limitations of stay were imposed to emphasize that new arrivals were accepted as visitors, rather than on a permanent basis. The present limitations enforced by the Director of Immigration are :-

(i) all new legal arrivals from

China on double journey exit. permits (visitors) are landed for 180 days or in accordance with the period of validity of their travel documents, whichever is the less;

(ii)

all new legal arrivals from China on single journey exit permits are landed for 12 months; and

those who are already in Hong Kong are granted subsequent extensions of about one year.

The arrangements in subparagraph 1(b) are

varied by the Immigration Department to meet operational requirements and apply only to immigrants in possession of PRC exit permits, the consideration of other applications having been suspended from 15 January 1979.
