Xiamen International Airport to Open Next June Beijing Xinhua in English 14th November

The construction of Xiamen International Airport in Fujian Province is in full swing and it is expected to open next June, according to an official of Xiamen City.

The official said the main runway of the new air- port is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year. The medium-sized Xiamen International Airport, he said is being built to accommodate Tridents and Boeing 737s, to cope with growing traffic following the expansion of trade and tourism in the province.

By the end of October workers had completed more than 1.12 million cubic metres of earthwork, laid 80,000 cubic metres of stone fragments for the main runway founda- tion, (1,600 metres long) and poured 13,000 cubic metres of cement. They also completed 330,000 cubic metres of earth- work to fill up the shoreline near the airport, the official said.

Construction is under way for the airport's sup- porting facilities, including the navigation system and a feeder railway designated to transport fuel. According to the official, they are expected to be completed in the first half of next year. Shentu, Director-General, of the Chinese Administration of Civil Aviation, inspected the airport construction work earlier this month and encouraged the builders to complete the project on schedule.

On 3rd November, accompanied by Provincial Party 1st Secretary XIANG Nan and others, he inspected the harbour and airport site at Xiamen SEZ and the mechanical and electrical industries in the export processing zone. He expressed satisfaction with the progress of these pro- jects and reiterated that there will be no change in the guiding principle laid down by the Central authorities on implementing special policies and flexible measures in Guangdong and Fujian.
