1) On 5th November the 'People's Daily' reported

similar remarks by XIAO Quanfu, a Central Committee member and Commander of the Urumqi PLA Units. XIAO, however, made no mention of interference from the right and referred only to the problem of 'left' influence. On 2nd November Guangdong's 'Nanfang Ribao' noted a visit to the Guangzhou Military Region by Politburo member WANG Zhen and his call for "further eradicating the lingering poison and influence of 'left' crroneous ideas". WANG'S visit occurred shortly after changes in the commands of the Guangzhou, Nanjing and Wuhan PLA Units. The Guangzhou Military Region was the headquarters of supporters of the late LIN Biao and the leadership in Beijing is concerned at opposition within the PLA generally to its pragmatic economic policies and 'de-Maoification' of politics.

2) On 14th November the 'Wen Wei Po; printed the

following piece:

Following the replacement of WEI Guoqing by YU Qiuli as the Director of the PLA General Political Department, the 'Report of the Epoch', a publication associated with the General Political Department, has been re-organised. This was a decision recently made by the CPC Central Propaganda Department.

The 'Report of the Epoch' caught nationwide attention by its criticisms against BAI Hua's 'Bitter Love', followed by its debates with 'Wen Yi Bao' (Literature & Art Gazette) and the 'People's Daily' on the criticism against liter- ary liberalisation. It had for long acted against the guidelines, principles and policies decided upon at the 3rd Plenum and had been regarded as one of the typical 'left' publica- tions. In accordance with the decision to re- organise the magazine, the following steps have been taken:

i) The original editorial committee

has been dissolved, and all the Army writers serving on the com- mittee have been posted back to the Army. HUANG Gang, one of the committee members, has been trans- ferred back to the 'People's Daily' to serve as a reporter. A new editorial committee has been formed.
