China now attaches importance to the training of foreign trade professionals to help expand international economic co-operation. In view of this, foreign trade bureaux at pro- vincial level have been given greater autonomy and the task of training more qualified foreign trade personnel.

The Anhui Foreign Trade College was established in 1980 and put under the administration of the Anhui Provincial Bureau of Foreign Trade. It has about 80 students, all of whom received a pass in the nationwide university admission examination. The College provides a two year study programme including subjects such as foreign trade, English language, business English, economic geography and politics. Graduates will be assigned to work in different foreign trade offices

or departments. Survey to Ensure all Children Receive a Primary Education

A primary school teacher from Shahe Commune in the

suburbs of Guangzhou Municipality said the Central Government recently promoted education in the rural communes. In line with the current policy, the Guangdong Provincial Education Bureau has introduced a regulation whereby every rural prim-

ary school will serve a particular area and all children of

school age will be enrolled. The education authorities will

conduct a survey every two to three years during which teachers will visit every household in the school area and record the

particulars of the children. Before a new school term begins, the school authorities will inform parents in writing of the

names of the children to be enrolled. Furthermore, the school will call upon parents through their respective neighbourhood committees and Production Brigades to observe the new regula- tion. Traveller said the scheme has been successful in most

rural communes.

The Guangdong Provincial Education Bureau recently set up refresher courses for rural primary school teachers

in a bid to raise standards. Additional funds were allocated to the schools for the purchase of more teaching materials and equipment. However, despite thesc efforts, many rural
