Departure Group (f)

This group of 20 refugees claims to have left Hue, Binh Tri Thien Province, Central Vietnam on 28th January 1982. The group admits to having spent nearly two months at the overseas Chinese hostel in Zhanjiang and arrived in Hong Kong aboard a boat which it claims was donated by the Chinese authorities.

For

None of those who took the Vietnamese Knowledge test was able to achieve a satisfactory score and widely conflicting stories were produced by members of the group. When faced with contradictions in their stories, members of the group merely shrug and claim to have been confused.

The wife stated positively example, one couple was interviewed simultaneously. that they were married in Autumn 1978. The husband stated positively that they left Vietnam some months' after they were married. this, the wife amended her claimed date of marriage to Spring 1981.

When faced with

Despite intensive questioning and confrontation of contradicting witnesses, no member of this group has admitted to being an ECVII, although the group is almost certainly composed of refugees who have been in China for a considerable period.

One member of the group told the interviewing team that the additional arrival on L/M 1642, HA VAN LOI, was an ECVII. This refugee could not be found when called for intervież. ·
