to negotiate automatic ticket barriers and travel in crowded conditions.

5.6.22 The options via Tuen Mun could be formed by a whole

range of high capacity fixed track systems.

However,

it is likely that these would all involve an inter- change to MTR at Tsuen Wan. This would produce journey times of over one hour from the airport to Tsim Sha Tsui and would be inconvenient and confusing to airline passengers.

5.6.23 At this stage it can be concluded that it would be

possible to absorb the airport public transport passenger volumes into the proposed trunk system. In view of the likely congested road conditions it would be desirable that a segregated public transport link to the urban areas be in operation when the airport opens. In theory it would be feasible to construct such railways by 1990. However, with current construction commitments on the KCR and MTR networks, further assessment of the financial and manpower resources available, and more detailed studies are required before accurate opening dates can be specified.
