5.6.18 Three public transport network options are shown
in Figure 5.10.
1)
Electrified KCR link via Tai
PO.
2) MTR extension from Tsuen Wan via the Kam
Tin Valley.
3)
Unspecified fixed track link from Tsuen Wan via Tuen Mun.
Each would be supported by express airport bus services to downtown terminals in Kowloon and HK Island as proposed for CLK. In addition a high speed ferry service could be provided linking the airport to HK Island and Kowloon. A ferry service would need a fall back alternative for periods when the airport is operating but ferry services are discontinued due to bad weather. For this reason all public transport demands have been allocated to land based modes. A major development on the Tin Shui Wai Site would be served by the proposed light rail system between Yuen Long and Tuen Mun. This could be extended to the airport to give excellent access, particularly for local employees.
5.6.19 The airport public transport trips would produce about a 10% increase in demands across the Rural New Territories cordon. No capacity problems would be envisaged on general public transport since the trips would largely be airline passengers with a peak demand in the mid-afternoon, and many of whom would use special airport and hotel buses.
5.6.20 The electrified KCR option would probably be the
most appropriate mode for an airport at Deep Bay. It would offer a 42 minute journey time, reliable and frequent services, generous seating and luggage using special "airport" stock. Airline passenger ticket and check-in facilities could be provided at the airport and Hung Hom, and also other major stations.
5.6.21 The MTR extension from Tsuen Wan would give very
good distribution at the expense of slower journey time of 50 minutes to Tsim Sha Tsui. Direct links to Central would be feasible, if trains ran through from Deep Bay. Operationally this may be undesirable due to the increased likelihood of disruptions to the tightly scheduled services in and out of Chater. It would be more difficult to provide special facilities for airline passengers, who would have
