In the case of existing or committed development the recommendations of E.P.A. have to be more pragmatic. For the purposes of this exercise it

has been taken that:

i)

ii)

All residential development within the 30 NEF is seriously affected, and planned relocation would be required.

NEF

Development lying between 25 and 30 would undeniably be affected but, with the exception of schools and other relevant social infrastructure, the E.P.A. would not recommend sound insulation.

5.2.5

The noise contours used in this exercise have been prepared by RMP-Encon, and together with the above cited standards have to be interpreted carefully. Two points are of great relevance in

this respect:

i)

ii)

The contour lines themselves are not geo- graphically precise, and even given a much greater level of predictive accuracy than has been possible in this exercise, the contours would remain imprecise and they have been interpreted accordingly.

By far the largest determinant of the noise environment of an airport is how the airport is operated (ie. the direction and volume of take offs and approaches, the limitations or otherwise on night operations etc.). Clearly there are a large number of permutations on operating possibilities not all of which, by any means, can be considered in

such a brief study as this.
