to enter into detailed discussions with the Chinese on Hong
Kong's future. A further meeting took place between the Secretary
of State and officials on 2 June. It was agreed then that
Lord MacLehose might be best placed to make the first approach
to the Prime Minister in the course of a farewell call. The
Prime Minister has agreed to see him on 23 July.

Meanwhile a meeting between the Secretary of State and Mr Heath
has been arranged for 30 June to discuss Mr Heath's talks in China
last April.
