UK/CHINA JOINT COMMUNIQUE
(I)
Representatives of the Government of the UK and the
Government of the PRC have met and discussed their bilateral
relationship and the question of Hong Kong.
(II)
The 2 Parties agree:
1 The Treaty of Nanking (1842), the 1st Convention
of Peking (1860) and the 2nd Convention of Peking (1898)
were all Unequal Treaties and do not provide a
satisfactory basis for cooperation between equal
sovereign states.
2. When in the view of the Parties the conditions
are ripe, they will enter into negotiations to conclude
a new Treaty regulating their future relations on a
basis of equality and friendship.
(III) HMG declares:

Hong Kong is a problem left over from history.
2)
The destiny of the territory of Hong Kong must
be considered as a whole.
3. It is the desire of HMG and of the 'people of
Hong Kong that when conditions are ripe the territory
should be reunited with the Chinese mainland as an
integral part of the PRC.
4.
It is not yet clear whether this reunification
will be achieved in 1997 or earlier or later.
5.
Pending reunification HMG will continue to
protect the stability and prosperity of the territory.
