SIGNIFICANCE OF VISIT

1.

This will be the first visit to China by a

British Prime Minister in office. The then Chinese Premier

Hua Guofeng visited Britain in 1979. The visit will provide

a valuable opportunity for exchanges of views at the highest

level.

It is not the custom to announce exact dates

until nearer the time.

OTHER COUNTRIES TO BE VISITED

The Prime Minister has not yet finally settled

her itinerary but she has accepted an invitation to visit

Japan as a guest of the Government and she will also visit

Hong Kong.

PROGRAMME IN CHINA

The programme has not yet been settled. The

Prime Minister hopes to visit Shanghai as well as Peking.
