(B) Chinese immigration and Vietnamese refugees

Mr. Jopling was concerned about the Vietnamese

refugee problem. CS indicated that this did

not represent a major problem in demographic

terms but considered that it did pose economic,

social and managerial problems. It was noted

that if there were to be a further influx of

Vietnamese refugees, Hong Kong might not be

so tolerant. It was noted that Hong Kong and

UK were in constant touch with the Chinese

Authorities on the question of Chinese

immigration.

(C) Macau receiving EEC status benefits

after Portugal has joined the EEC

It was noted that this could have an effect

in a number of fields, namely, trade

(preferential treatment of commodities

produced in EEC), the right of work and

abode and student status in fellow EEC countries,

and it would be unacceptable to Hong Kong if

Macau were to enjoy EEC status benefits, but

not Hong Kong. This question was pursued later

with the LPS.
