Oxygen and Acetylene Co. Ltd.

25. A large range of products of all kinds are also sourced

from Hong Kong. Where these are produced to the design and

specification of the UK company they represent a considerable

additional involvement in Hong Kong's manufacturing industry

in its role as one of the world's leading international

subcontractors.

Among these for example are garments, semi-

conductors and electrical and electronic components, toys and

gift ware, domestic electrical appliances, instruments, auto

exhaust systems, watches and calculators.

26. Hong Kong offers an efficient manufacturing service and

a marketing base for UK exports to the Pacific Region.

These

UK companies which have established joint ventures or wholly

owned subsidiaries in Hong Kong have enjoyed an almost

unblemished record of growth and successful operations.

There is still tremendous scope for more profitable and

mutually beneficial cooperation between Hong Kong and UK

Industry involving the two way flow of goods and services.

The main areas for which Hong Kong sees particular promise

for future cooperation are:

(1) the whole span of electronics industry, computers

and information processing, instrumentation,

medical and educational electronics, in which

the UK has advanced technical and scientific

capability, while HK offers a strong efficient

vertically integrated engineering and manu-

facturing base with highly developed links with

the research and development and markets of the USA

construction and building materials and supplies

for Hong Kong's enormous construction programme

steel fabrication to service UK heavy engineering

and construction contracts in the Far East

(4) food manufacture and processing.
