UK investment is very wide and is summarised by industry
sectors at Annex 3.
23. As would be expected the textile and garment industries
lead with a total of 15 companies of which 7 are joint ventures
with products ranging from sewing thread to yacht and surf
sails to high fashion garments. of the joint ventures amongst
these companies, the most successful is Neil Pryde Ltd.,
probably the world's largest sail maker. In garments Sidha
Corporation International Ltd. making ladies' silk dresses
and with a 85% UK participation and Sterling Products Ltd.
making children's wear have been very successful in their
respective fields. It is interesting to note that Sterling
Products Ltd. is a joint venture between British and USA
companies with no H.K. participation and there are other
similar examples of UK companies in joint ventures with
other overseas companies in Hong Kong.
24. The next largest group is that comprising the electronics
and watches industries. Amongst these are Astec Components
Ltd. and Astec Circuit Boards Ltd. which are subsidiaries
of Astec International Ltd. which in turn is part of the
UK BSR Group. These are among the largest advanced elec-
tronics companies in Hong Kong and a world leader in their
main field of power supply components. Another large British
interest is that in the watch industry where the Remex Group
has established a dominant position in mechanical and quartz
watches. Radofin Electronics (Far East) has also been very
successful in its field and has a wide range of advanced
electronic products from video games to view data and
teletext recorders.
