VISIT TO HONG KONG OF THE SELECT COMMITTEE ON INDUSTRY AND TRADE
1. Thank you for your letter of 29 November. It provides a most useful account of the Committee's visit, and helps to balance the slightly acrimonious incident reported in your telegram BTC 108.
2. I have a couple of points on your letter. First, from this end the factory and other visits seem a good idea, even at the risk of some grumbling. Clearly it is useful for MPs to see for themselves as much of Hong Kong as is possible during their visits: it is also important from the PR angle that they should be seen to be doing this.
3. Second, the Parliamentary Unit advise that the Committee's Report may not include a specific section on Hong Kong, as their brief was primarily to examine the ASEAN countries.
4.
Apart from the inevitable fencing over the future, and the fracas over the FCO telegram, the Select Committee's visit seems to have gone well, thanks to the organisational efforts of you and your staff.
