DEFENCE COMMITTEE

OLAN OFFICER

INDEX

6th April, 1982

Dea Alan,

I can now give you further details of the Committee's proposed visit to Washington, Japan and Hong Kong.

Because of the problem with bank holidays in Canada, the Committee have decided not to go to Ottawa and to rearrange the visit in accordance with the timings on the attached sheet.

Washington DC

For

We shall arrive in Washington on Monday 28th June. Tuesday, we have approached McDonnell Douglas to brief the Committee on the AV8B and Hawk projects. Preliminary agreement has also been reached with the Staff Director of the Senate Armed Services Committee that our two Committees should hold a joint meeting on Wednesday 30th June. This follows a successful meeting in London on 1st and 2nd November 1981.

We would be grateful if you could assist us in making arrangements for meetings at the State and Defence Departments. The particular interests of the Committee are Defence sales; and the role of Japanese defence forces. The Committee also wish to make an out of town visit. One suggestion is to visit West Point. Would our Embassy have any views?

Japan

The Committees wishes remain as indicated in my previous letters. The Chairman is to meet Mr. Yukio Satoh of the Japanese Embassy in London on 5th May to discuss detailed plans for the visit.

Hong Kong

Our plans are as previously indicated - to examine the current and likely future roles of British forces, the conditions of British servicemen and the defence costs agreement. I imagine that MoD will. lead in offering an outline programme. One of our Members has already had a private word with the new Governor when he came to the House of Commons.

Thank you for your help in these arrangements. Please let me know if I can offer any further information.ya
