EXPENDITURE COMMITTEE (DEFENCE & EXTERNAL AFFAIRS SUB-COMMITTEE) 35

Housing

6. Good. Standards, particularly for the junior staff have improved considerably since the last Inspection.

Absence of Normal Amenities

7. N A.

Civil Unrest

8. The Embassy was attacked in July 1974 and January 1975, on both occasions in protest against HMG's Cyprus policy. For a period before and after both episodes staff endured considerable anti-British feeling on the part of the Greeks. There have been no major demonstrations against this Embassy since January. There are periodic bomb attacks on diplomatic cars (especially those with yellow plates).

Restriction on Movement

9. There are no restrictions throughout the greater part of Greece. In a zone close to the land borders staff have unrestricted movement along main roads but must give advance notice of any journey they plan to make off the main roads. In a further narrow zone neighbouring the land borders, movement is restricted to main roads leading to border crossing points.

Possibilities for Local Leave

10. Endless, but expensive, especially during the long tourist season.

STAFF IN GREECE

1. The British Embassy in Athens employs a total of 37 UK-based staff and 80 LE staff, the latter figure including 11 part-time office cleaners and 13 Residence Domestic staff.

2. The Consulate in Salonika and the Vice-Consulates in Piraeus, Heraklion and Corfu employ a further 11 LE staff.

3. The LE staff are of the following nationalities:
