MAINTENANCE OF GOVERNMENT OWNED PROPERTY IN ATHENS

1. A UK-based DOE Representative is resident in Athens, as a fully accredited member of the Embassy staff, and is responsible for the maintenance of our two Government owned properties, the Residence and Chancery main building.

2. The DOE Resident Representative is also accredited to Yugoslavia, Bulgaria and Rumania and responsible for Government owned property in those countries, which he frequently visits. He also acts as a Purchasing Agent for our posts in the Middle East.

3. In Athens the DOE Resident Rep. has two LE supporting staff, a (British) Building Supervisor and a (Greek) Plant Engineer.

4. During his absences on visits to other posts in his parish, his duties devolve on the AO.

Diseases

LOCAL CONDITIONS

1. No major problems or exotic diseases. Most staff stay remarkably healthy. Colds are common and those who live in the centre of town and hence endure the worst pollution, tend to suffer from respiratory problems.

Sanitation

2. Main drainage in the centre of town, in Papagos and in parts of Psychico: mostly cess-pits in the suburbs. We have encountered no major problems on this

score.

Medical Facilities

3. There are plenty of doctors, hospitals and private clinics, but nursing standards are not as high as in the UK.

Climate

4. Generally good. Spring and autumn are short but delightful. Summer is hot but not excessively so, although small children especially feel it trying. Winter is not unlike Southern England-mostly rather gloomy and wet but with occasional crisp and sunny spells. Snow falls occasionally.

Isolation

5. N A.
