As for Hong Kong, obviously the expiration of the New Territories lease in 1997 is a problem to be
faced but we know that the Chinese are thinking
about the future of Hong Kong with a view to
discussing it with us in due course. No decisions
made have yet been taken and no negotiations have yet
taken place. All concerned are keen to see Hong
Kong's prosperity and stability maintained.
Meanwhile, as Ministers have made clear on several
occasions, HMG's commitment to Hong Kong and to the interests of its people is as strong as ever.
I am grateful for the concern that you and your
friend have shown and I have no objection whatsoever to any of the above being used on an unattributable
basis.
