SUPPORT FOR HMG IN THE FALKLAND CRISIS

1.

CSE

1/6 AF1/6

Mr Lloyd, Governor, Cayman Islands, telephoned this afternoon, mainly to say that a UK radio station had been asking him questions about the Caymans appeal.

2.

He went on to say that the local Finance Committee was meeting at that moment to decide on a Government contribution to be paid to the British Government. He thought the figure might be anything between $250,000 to $1,000,000. He believed the Committee would decide to send two representatives to London to hand over the contribution at the opening of the new Caymans office in London on 3 June. He added that he thought the sum raised by the public appeal ($20,000?) would not only be handed over at the same time but would also be payable to the British Govt.

3. I told Mr Lloyd that, much as we appreciated these gestures, we would prefer to see such funds paid, eg to the South Atlantic Fund and not to the British Govt. He took the point and said he would do what he could to steer things in this direction but could of course make no promise. He agreed to let us know the final local decision as soon as possible.
