Hong Kong Tramways

Purpose

To consider the continued operation of HKT services until the opening of the MTR Island Line.

(a)

Progress Made & Present Position

The Governor-in-Council approved in principle to the proposals for

(1) amending legislation;

(ii)

(iii)

an agreement for the operation of the tramway until end 1986;

a land exchange of the Sharp Street depot site

for a site adjacent to KPP54.

Next Quarter Targets

(a) Finalise legislative

proposals.

(b)

Finalise a tramways agreement.

The companies contesting KWG's title to the Sharp Street site withdrew their court action in

late July, and came to a settlement. Negotiations with KWG over the land exchange have been resumed by the Lands Dept.

Fare Increase Application

To evaluate application and, if supported, obtain approval of TAC and ExCo.

Company was asked to postpone its application. Legal advice is being sought on reinstatement of roads if Tramway service were to be withdrawn in 1986.

Pursue negotiations with KWG.
